Welcome to the Music department. Music in KS4, as in KS3, is a very practical subject. Lessons continue to focus on performing, composing and listening/appraising and students study music from around the world and from different periods in time.
Students will be expected to perform on different instruments (they may also specialise in one) in solo and ensemble performances as well as composing music in varying styles using a range of notation.
Students are encouraged to reflect on their own and others’ work whilst learning to appreciate and enjoy the music that they are introduced to. Both BTEC and GCSE courses allow for all sorts of learning styles – from self-taught guitarists to students who have been reading music for a long time. We utilise music technology a great deal and regularly incorporate Sibelius 5 and Reason 4 into lessons. Teachers in the department are very passionate about music and we try our very hardest to make sure that students at Harris feel the same way.
